King’s Cross Area

Today I was on a guided tour with the NAWC in the area around King’s Cross Station.

The area have had a major make over and have been upgraded and opened up to get rid of its bad reputation. Several of the ladies told that they stopped using King’s Cross Station during the ’80s as it was mostly criminals and not so decent people in the area.

If you worked in the area or nearby you got off at the station before or after. I do understand that the “bad” elements haven’t disappeared just moved somewhere else but the borough decided to take back the area so it could be used by everyone.

They have built apartments, social housing (mixed) student’s accommodation, squares, schools, restaurants and green areas. E.g. they have a pool in the area and it’s cleaned in a natural way through plants.

I asked a little about the social housing and the apartments as they mix them here. In Sweden rental flats are built in separate areas and we don’t have social housing as people think it’s deictically and visions the workhouses we once had. Here they have mixed it as they see an advantage that it’s not segregated as then the area will be taken care of better. I like their thinking and I wish that we could have a little of the same thinking in Sweden. London is huge and if you can’t accommodate those who can’t afford millions for a one bedroom flat then it will also be hard to find the people taking care of the city and doing the less attractive jobs as garbage collector, cleaners etcetera. They have social housing (often hidden) in most parts of the city even if they could earn a lot of money if they teared them down and built flashy flats.
