Spitalfields Walk

English

Today it was time again for a guided tour with NAWC and this time it was in Spitalfields, it’s located in the East End between Liverpool Street and Brick Lane. Jack the Ripper territory.

I have been at the Old Spitalfields Market but didn’t not know all of the history. The area was created for the Irish and Huguenot silk weavers that came in the end of 17th century and in the beginning of 19th century it was all declined and in the end of the century it was mostly robbery and prostitution. There was a large Jewish population in the beginning of the 20th century and by the end of the century they had moved and replaced by an influx of Bangladeshi immigrants, who worked in the local textile industry and made Brick Lane the curry capital of London.
